Friday's Top 5... My Favourite Best Picture Winners

#5: On The Waterfront

One of the few Best Picture winners that no one seems to argue with. The politics behind it remain a bit fraught, but the product itself is wonderful. Showcasing Oscar winning performances by Marlon Brando and Eva Marie Saint, On The Waterfront is a film that everyone should see at least once.

#4: All About Eve

Brilliant from beginning to end and in absolutely every respect. The entire cast is excellent, the screenplay is flawless, and the direction is strong and assured. It is perfection.

#3: Amadeus

A sweeping tale of envy, stardom, and the fickle nature of fame and "legacy." Most biopics try too hard to be history lessons; this one opts instead to be pure entertainment.

#2: Annie Hall

My favourite Woody Allen movie. This time shifting, fourth wall breaking romance with the objectively "unhappy" ending, is one of the best and most innovative romantic comedies ever made.

#1: Casablanca

My favourite movie, period, so of course it tops my favourite Best Picture winners list. It's got Bogart, Bergman, one of the greatest and most quotable screenplays of all time, and a colorful cast of supporting characters.

I would want to add that Annie Hall deserves bonus points for beating Star Wars. Woody has the Force!!!!
