Guide to Oscar: Best Adapted Screenplay

The Best Adapted Screenplay category is one of the original Oscar categories and honors screenplays adapted from another source. Screenplays are considered "adapted" both when directly inspired from, for example, a novel or a television series, and when the story is a sequel to another film, in which case the characters are considered to have been adapted for the purpose of the new film.

This year's nominees:

Stan Chevin, Steven Zaillian, Aaron Sorkin, Moneyball

First nomination for Chevin.

4th nomination for Zaillian. Previously won for Schindler's List and nominated for Gangs of New York and Awakenings.

2nd nomination for Sorkin. Previously won for The Social Network.

Bridget O'Connor, Peter Straughan, Tinker, Tailor, Soldier, Spy

First nomination for both.

Alexander Payne, Nat Faxon, Jim Rash, The Descendants,

3rd nomination for Payne for Screenplay. Previously won for Sideways and nominated for Election.

First nomination for Faxon and Rash.

George Clooney, Grant Heslov, Beau Willimon, The Ides of March

2nd nomination for both Clooney and Heslov for Screenplay. Both previously nominated for Good Night and Good Luck.

First nomination for Willimon.

John Logan, Hugo

3rd nomination. Previously nominated for The Aviator and Gladiator.
