Oscarstravaganza: Best Sound Mixing 2010

Introduced in 1930, the Sound Mixing category, sometimes simply referred to as "Best Sound," honors the production sound mixers and re-recording mixers who create the balance between dialogue, score, and effects. Unlike Sound Editing, Sound Mixing has been awarded every year since 1930 as a competitive category. Since 1950 the category has always had 5 nominees but in the years prior to that the number of nominees were anywhere between 3 and 12.

This year's nominees:

Christopher Boyes, Gary Summers, Andy Nelson, Tony Johnson, Avatar: Together the team for Avatar has won the Critics Choice and been nominated for the BAFTA and C.S.A. awards. Individually, this is Boyes' 6th nomination with 2 previous wins (King Kong and The Return of the King) and he is also nominated for Best Sound Editing; Summers has 8 previous nominations, including also being nominated as part of the team for Transformers and he has 4 previous wins (Terminator 2: Judgment Day, Jurassic Park, Titanic and Saving Private Ryan); Nelson has 15 nominations including his work for Star Trek and has 1 previous win (Saving Private Ryan); and Johnson has one previous nomination.

Paul N.J. Ottosson, Ray Beckett, Hurt Locker: This is Ottosson's first nomination for Sound Mixing. He is also nominated for Sound Editing. It is also the first nomination for Beckett. Together they've also been nominated for the BAFTA, Critics Choice, and C.S.A. awards.

Micheal Minkler, Tony Lamberti, Mark Ulano, Inglorious Basterds: Minkler has 10 previous nominations and has won 3 times (Black Hawk Down, Chicago, Dreamgirls). This is the first nomination for Lamberti and the second for Ulano.

Anna Behlmer, Andy Nelson, Peter J. Devlin, Star Trek: This is the 10th nomination for Behlmer and the third for Devlin. For Nelson's stats see Avatar. Together the three have received BAFTA and C.S.A. nominations.

Greg P. Russell, Gary Summers, Geoffrey Patterson, Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen: This is Russell's 13th nomination and the 2nd for Patterson. For Summers' stats see Avatar. Together the team has also been nominated for the C.S.A.

I'm normally pretty good at guessing the winner of this category, but I'm stumped this year. I can see it going to either Avatar, Locker or Basterds.

The scene that clinches it for Hurt Locker is that desert shoot-out.

On the other hand, Avatar had to not only create sounds for entire new species, but balance them with the tons of action occurring onscreen.

Decisions, decisions!

Oh, I have no doubt that Avatar will take both sound categories and the visual effects category.

Agreed. I just hope Locker & Basterds eek out a few wins.
