Everybody cut, everybody cut! Yeah, the story of Footloose, about a town which has outlawed dancing and the spunky teens who challenge the establishment, is pretty dumb but it remains a lot of fun.
Yes, the story is fairly predictable and sometimes clunky (and, seriously, his name is Johnny Castle?), but there's a reason why Dirty Dancing remains so enduring: it's awesome. It's one of those movies that you can't resist watching if you find it playing on TV and, in all likelihood, saying the most famous lines right along with the characters.
A dance movie, a family drama, and a coming-of-age story all rolled into one. The breakthrough film of director Stephen Daldry, Billy Elliot is a sometimes funny, often moving film with some pretty good dancing mixed in as well.
Is there anything about this film that isn't iconic? Saturday Night Fever has been parodied so many times that it should play as camp by now, but the film still holds up on its own terms.
One of the most critically beloved films of the 1990s, Masayuki Suo's Shall We Dance? is a beautiful and entirely entertaining film. Don't bother with the 2004 American remake; go for the original.
