Friday's Top 5... Upcoming Live Action Fairy Tales

#5 & 4: Peter Pan

There are (at least) two films in the works that reimagine the Peter Pan story. One will star Channing Tatum as Peter and feature Peter and Captain Hook as estranged brothers, which will either be a refreshing take on the old story, or a complete disaster.

The other film reinterprets the story as a detective thriller in which Hook is the good guy and Peter Pan is the serial killer he's trying to hunt down. Seriously, I'm not making that up.

#3: Beauty and the Beast

Sure, the Beauty and the Beast story has already been made into two great films - Disney's animated version and Jean Cocteau's live action version - but this one is set to be directed by Guillermo Del Torro, so there's definitely room for one more.

#2: The Little Mermaid

Not much is known about this one yet, save that it will be directed by Joe Wright (Atonement, Pride & Prejudice, Hanna) and that it will be scripted by Abi Morgan (Shame, The Iron Lady). It could be interesting, however, especially if it retains the darkness of Hans Christian Andersen's original story.

#1: Maleficent

Slated for release in 2014, this one will star Angelina Jolie as the eponymous character and tell the Sleeping Beauty story from the perspective of the villain. Sounds promising - hopefully we won't be sick and tired of live action fairy tales by then.

That Hook as a cop one might turn out okay - a good reimagining is always fun.

But as for them as brothers, how about no. Barrie already GAVE Pan a brother, and it's not Hook. There's a book out that uses Barrie's notes for more Pan adventure and yeah - the focus is none other than Peter's real brother.

Check it out.
