Friday's Top 5... Favourite Canadian Filmmakers

#5: Denys Arcand

Characters in Arcand's films love to talk. And talk. And talk. Fortunately, they're very good at it and Arcand is very good at dramatizing the art of speech.

#4: David Cronenberg

Not all his efforts really work for me, but I still think he's one of the most consistently interesting filmmakers working today.

#3: Atom Egoyan

His layered stories, most of which involve multiple threads weaving in and out of each other, are rich and often haunting. His last film (Chloe) proved to be divisive, but that doesn't make me any less curious to see what he comes out with next.

#2: Denis Villeneuve

Polytechnique was my first introduction to Villeneuve and my appreciation for him as a filmmaker grew after seeing Maelstrom. His absolutely brilliant last film, Incendies, just seals the deal.

#1: Guy Maddin

I've said it before, I'll say it again: Guy Maddin is a genius. I can't wait to see what he does next.

It's big Davey C for me - but then he might just make a list of my 'top 5 directors from anywhere'.

Always good to see some Egoyan love though.

Gotta love Egoyan - he's too prolific to be ignored.
